Plain English

What is an air source heat pump?

It moves heat rather than making it. A fan draws in outside air, even at freezing, over a refrigerant that boils at a very low temperature. A compressor squeezes that vapour, which raises its temperature, and a heat exchanger passes the heat into your radiators, underfloor pipes and hot water cylinder.

Because it's moving existing heat instead of burning fuel, one unit of electricity delivers three to four units of heat. That ratio is called the SCOP, and it's the whole reason the running costs work.

  1. 1

    Outside air

Heat is absorbed from the air, even at -15°C.

  2. 2

    Heat pump

A compressor raises the temperature to a useful level.

  3. 3

    Your home

Radiators, underfloor heating and hot water, all year round.

Government grant

£7,500 standard, £9,000 if you're replacing oil or LPG

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant that comes straight off your invoice. You don't pay it and claim it back. To qualify you need to be a homeowner or small landlord in England or Wales, replacing a fossil fuel system, with an EPC that has no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations.

  • We check eligibility at your free survey
  • We submit and manage the entire application
  • The grant is deducted from your quoted price
  • Available until March 2027 while funding lasts

Benefits

Why a heat pump is worth the change

300–400% efficient

For every unit of electricity in, you get three to four units of heat out. No boiler can do that.

Lower carbon

Around a tonne of CO₂ a year less than a gas boiler, and it keeps improving as the grid greens.

Lower bills

Especially off oil, LPG, electric or solid fuel, the savings are immediate and substantial.

Heating and cooling

Many air-to-water systems can also provide gentle cooling in summer.

15–20 year lifespan

Longer than most boilers, with a simple annual service to keep the warranty valid.

Adds EPC points

A better EPC helps at sale, at remortgage, and if you ever let the property.

Straight talk

Is my home suitable?

Not every home is ready for a heat pump today, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you one that disappoints.

Insulation

Loft and cavity wall insulation matter more than the brand of heat pump. If yours is thin, we'll say so, and it affects grant eligibility too.

Radiator sizing

Lower flow temperatures mean some radiators need to be bigger. Typically two to four on an average home, priced transparently in your quote.

Outdoor space

You need roughly a metre of clear space in front of the unit for airflow, at the side or rear of the property.

Noise and neighbours

Around 40–45 dB. We design to stay under the 42 dB limit at your neighbour's nearest window, and we'll advise on siting.

Bundle

Heat pump + solar + battery

A heat pump turns electricity into heat very efficiently. Solar makes that electricity for free. Add a battery and you can run the heat pump on stored sunshine and off-peak power, cutting running costs dramatically.

Grant paperwork handled start to finish
Rang three companies and Elite Eco were the only ones who explained the Boiler Upgrade Scheme properly instead of just quoting a number. They did the survey on the Monday, sorted the £7,500 application themselves and we had a fixed price a week later. Vaillant unit went in over three days, old oil boiler taken away, garden left as they found it.

Honest about what our radiators needed
We were on oil and dreading the change. Craig went round every room measuring and told us straight that four radiators needed upsizing, which two other firms had not mentioned at all. Cost more up front but the house is warm all day rather than in bursts, and the oil deliveries have stopped.

Great install, paperwork took a little longer
Very happy with the system itself, quiet outside and the hot water recovers quickly. The engineers were polite and tidy and showed me how to use the controls before leaving. Only reason for four stars is the MCS certificate took about two weeks longer than I expected, though they did chase it for me.

Cold snap and the house never dropped
Installed in November so it has had a proper test. Even during the frost in January the heating kept up without us touching anything. Electricity is up as you would expect, but with the gas gone we are around £40 a month better off. They also rang after a fortnight to check the flow temperature was set right.

No pressure, just clear numbers
What I appreciated most was being given a written breakdown of what the grant covers and what we would actually pay, with the finance option shown separately. Nobody tried to close us on the day. We took a fortnight to decide and the price was still the same when we called back.

Second job with them
They fitted our solar two years ago so the heat pump was an easy decision. Same lads turned up, which says something about the business. Cylinder went in the airing cupboard neatly and the pipework is lagged properly, not the mess I have seen on neighbours' installs.
